A taste of Spain for Penarth

wantspacegotspace.co.uk - Bar 44 Tapas y Copas opens on Windsor Road, PenarthBar 44, the first and longest established Spanish tapas bar in Wales, which has a thriving business in the market town of Cowbridge, has opened a second establishment, Bar 44 Tapas y Copas in Penarth.

Brothers Tom and Owen Morgan opened Bar 44 in Cowbridge straight after leaving university. They celebrated 10 years in business last September, with the restaurant serving some 2500 dishes each week and being listed in the Good Food Guide for the second year in succession.

Offering 70 covers, the 1600 square foot refurbished restaurant on Windsor Road features authentic tapas such as fresh Hake with Arrocina Beans and Chorizo, fresh seared Ibérico Pork, arroz negro with cuttlefish, and of course authentic Croquetas. The tapas is freshly prepared by chefs Tommy Heaney previously of 2 Michelin star restaurant Whitewater in Sydney, and Tom Maynard of J. Sheekey, part of the Caprice restaurant group.

“Penarth was an obvious choice for us to develop the business so we were delighted to secure the restaurant on a ten year lease from Plymouth Estates,” says Tom Morgan.

“The flavours in good tapas are sophisticated and vary enormously in different parts of Spain,” he explains.  “Everything we serve is made on the premises or traditionally cured and aged in Spain then carved or cut by us here in Penarth.”

Cardiff Chartered Surveying firm, Cooke & Arkwright acted on behalf of the landlord, Plymouth Estates in the deal.

Alex Kalebic, Associate with Cooke & Arkwright’s Retail agency said, “We are delighted to have secured this letting to Bar 44 Tapas y Copas on behalf of Plymouth Estates. The town is a desirable place for businesses to locate to, considering its proximity to the Capital City and it being a vibrant location on the coast. Penarth already hosts a number of really good independent retailers and I think

that this has been a factor as to why the town has performed more robustly when compared with many others across South Wales. Bar 44 Tapas y Copas has acquired a 100% prime position on Windsor Road and the landlord has been keen to encourage this type of tenant because it adds to the eclectic mix of retail offering and contributes to a well-rounded town centre. I know there has been a lot of excitement locally because it is offering something completely new to the town. We are certain that Bar 44 will quickly become very popular with the local community.”
