Entries close for inaugural City of Newport Half Marathon after grand support

wantspacegotspace.co.uk - Entries close for inaugural City of Newport Half Marathon after grand supportThe inaugural City of Newport half marathon has been such a runaway success St David’s Hospice Care  have had to close entries a month and half ahead of the start.

The event, which is the first staged by the hospice at home charity in Newport, has attracted more than the 1,000 entries the charity limited the event to in its first year.

Although entry for the marathon has now closed organisers are still looking for volunteers to help on the day as marshals and also for entertainers, such as local musicians, to help create a fun atmosphere.

Kris Broome, of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the response to this our first half marathon in Newport. The support right from the very start was fantastic. The City of Newport Half Marathon appears to have really grabbed people’s interest and imagination with entries from day one  coming in from across the board from serious runners to first-timers and returners.

“We set a limit of 1,000 entrants for the first year so we could see how the event went but aim to increase the size year on year to reach a target of perhaps 20,000 runners after maybe five years.
“We are now hoping that the event, as well as being a lot of fun for the runners and entrants, will also help us raise much needed funds for St David’s Hospice Care.”

Individuals and teams are taking part in the The City of Newport Half Marathon which is being staged on Sunday, March 3 rd starting at 9am from the Newport International Sports Village. Entry is £22. Every participant receives an event T-Shirt.

One team entry, Linea Resourcing, has recruited a dozen of its staff to take part in the Newport half marathon.

The technical recruitment business, based at the Eastern Business Park, St Mellons, near Newport, is also signed up as a partner in the charity fund raising event.

Linea Resourcing Managing Director Mike Gorshkov, aged 43, said 12 people from the company are in training to tackle the half marathon with the aim of raising is excess of £1,000 for St David’s Hospice Care.

The experienced runner has competed in the New York Marathon, as well as half marathons in Cardiff, Bristol and the Forest of Dean.

Mike said: “We’re supporting this event as St David’s Hospice Care is our nominated charity and we also want to help improve workforce fitness. We will also use the event as a valuable team building exercise.

“Newport has hosted large events in recent years such as Ryder Cup, the British Cycling training camps and so on but the City of Newport Marathon is an inclusive event for the community of Newport.

“It is a great opportunity for the City to demonstrate its community spirit and to support the local charity either by participating, supporting runners or helping the charity with event organisation.”
