Maltings ‘Highly Commended’ at RICS Awards

wantspacegotspace.co.uk - Maltings ‘Highly Commended’ at RICS AwardsLess than a year after its £3m office refurbishment was opened by Welsh Gold Medalist, Lynn ‘The Leap’ Davies, CBE and rugby great Gareth Edwards CBE, The Maltings has won the Highly Commended Certificate in the Building Conservation Category at the RICS Wales & South West Awards 2013. The Maltings is a Grade II listed Victorian Malthouse in East Tyndall Street, Cardiff and is a unique development that has set an example in building conservation.

Over its 130 year life The Maltings has been internally modernised to address business requirements without affecting its listed landmark features. It now houses diverse activities varying from a broad spectrum of business tenants to a Victorian set for the Dr Who series on the BBC. Owned by Nick Williams, the collaboration to modernise the interior included Surveyors Bowen & Partners and Architects Davies Llewellyn Jones. The developer was Knox and Wells Ltd.

Kathy Fox, Managing Director of The Maltings, said: “We’re thrilled and honoured to have received such important recognition for the work we have done at The Maltings from the RICS. The project surveyors, architects and contractors all deserve immense credit for their combined efforts in taking the initial design concept and delivering what we can see today.”

Roger Thomas of Cooke & Arkwright, consultant surveyors to the project said, “This has been a noteworthy building in Cardiff for over a hundred years and when you consider the calibre and heritage associated with the many entries for the Building Conservation awards you can appreciate the achievement of The Maltings in being highly commended.  We think this award is very well deserved. The serviced offices are home to many fledgling companies varying from the professions to IT, marketing and laboratories, all of which have the opportunity to interface with each other. Inside, the facilities are ultra-modern, while the external structure faithfully reproduces the kiln roofs and brick façade. It’s an inspirational place for start-ups and more established enterprises, and has been well received in a challenging market. This is endorsed by the fact that the newly created space is now 90% occupied.”

The RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Awards showcase the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the environment, and the 2013 awards received the most entries of any RICS Awards to-date. The Building Conservation category, which was the most fiercely contested, recognises outstanding work in conservation of a single building or group of buildings and cover renovation or conservation to a new or original use. This year the geographical area was expanded to include the whole of the South West and Wales, and entries for the Building Conservation category ranged from Cornwall to Conwy.
