wantspacegotspace.co.uk - The Lucky Severn are looking for a powerful performance at this year’s Monmouth Raft RaceA crack team of highly skilled engineers and support staff are putting a considerable amount of power into their first ever attempt at the strength sapping Rotary Club of Monmouth Raft Race.

Siemens has gathered a team of 15 to launch their inaugural challenge for honours on the River Wye with eight of that number set to make the cut and crew their craft, The Lucky Severn.

Siemens  maintains and operates the Severn Power Station at Nash, Newport.

Monmouth Raft Race Team captain Operations Engineer Lee Bradley, from Cwmbran, said: “We’ve called our raft The Lucky Severn as our power station is called Severn Power. The team consists of a competitive crew who will be hoping to place well on race day.  The team will be seeking to have as much fun as possible while at the same supporting an excellent cause, St David’s Hospice Care. This is the first time that we have entered the raft race although we have supported St David's Hospice Care for the past two years.”

Siemens O&M - Severn Power Ltd. commercial manager Kerry Cope , said the  Siemens O&M team, based at the Severn Power Station, operate and maintain the facility on behalf of  DONG Energy.

Kerry said Siemens in general provides a vast range of engineering services in to a diverse range of sectors including health care, energy and rail. A total of 37 people are employed at the Severn Power Station.  Siemens employ approximately 13, 000 people in the UK across the various disciplines.

She said: “St David's Hospice Care was adopted as the Siemens O&M annual charity and have remained so for the past two years.  The annual charity is voted in by the team at site and some staff members had experience of being supported by St David's Hospice Care or having lost loved ones to cancer.”

The Monmouth raft race is organised by the Rotary Club of Monmouth. This year the event has attracted financial sponsorship from Mandarin Stone and Kymin, in addition to promotional and operational support from Module IT.

Monmouth Rotarian Norman Williams, welcoming the Siemens team, said organisers are increasingly using social media to recruit this year to recruit more people to take part in and enjoy the event this year.

Kris Broome, of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “Siemens appear to be really up for the challenge and are likely to register a strong performance, and have a lot of fun along the way, at this their first attempt.

“We’re thrilled that Siemens are supporting St David’s Hospice care and entering a team and look forward to welcoming others prepared to take part in one of the best and most fun events of the entire summer.”

Monmouth Raft Race starts at Monmouth Rowing Club and ends at Tump Farm six-and-a-half miles down river at Whitebrook where there are stalls, food, live music, a beer tent and entertainment.
