Transformed: from disused warehouse into exciting new ski centre by Vail Williams

wantspacegotspace.co.uk - Vail Williams - Transformed: from disused warehouse into exciting new ski centre by Vail WilliamsSnow sports fans are anticipating the transformation of a disused warehouse in Reading into an exciting new facility that will give them the thrill of skiing downhill – without the hassle of going back up.

The Skiplex attraction is set to open on December 1st this year after the planning team at Vail Williams helped it win permission from Wokingham District Council for an empty industrial building at Headley Park, Woodley.

The ingenious indoor system operates like an over-sized treadmill and allows skiers or snowboarders to practice their skills for much longer than is possible on short all-season ski slopes.

Vail Williams had to work hard to secure permission without any pre-commencement conditions so work could start quickly. It is expected its opening will be very busy as skiers flock to refresh their skills before heading abroad for the real thing.

Vail Williams partner James Lacey said: “This was a very exciting project to be involved in and shows how an apparently out of favour building can still be transformed into a smart and innovative business, creating jobs and leisure opportunities.

“We had to pull out all the stops to secure permission so that work could start as soon as possible and we’re very pleased to have got approval so the business can open its doors before Christmas.”

It is grabbing attention as only the second of its kind in the UK and follows the trend in Europe where there are now over 100. Evidence shows you can learn up to eight times faster on a Skiplex than on real snow.

The transformation of the warehouse was designed by architects Ramsden & Partners, and is a smart way to use a structure that had lain empty and on the market for some time.
