Aberdeen is Scotland's third largest conurbation with a population of 210,400 and is also one of Scotland's 32 local government council areas. The city extends to 184.46 km² (71.22 sq miles) and includes the former burghs of Old Aberdeen, New Aberdeen, Woodside and the Royal Burgh of Torry to the south of River Dee. The city is built on many hills, these including Castle Hill, St. Catherine's Hill and Windmill Hill.

The oil industry has seen Aberdeen labelled as the 'Oil Capital of Europe' and the seaport, with its ferry services to the Orkneys and Shetland, and heliport are two of the busiest in Europe. Whereas, previously, the local economy had been underpinned by fishing, textile manufacturing, ship building and paper-making, the last three decades have seen massive growth in the oil industry and this has also led to a corresponding increase in activity within the technology sector. There is also a dynamic and fast growing electronics design and development industry.

The city ranks third in Scotland in terms of its shopping facilities. The traditional shopping streets of Union Street and George Street are now complemented by the St. Nicholas and Bon Accord Shopping Centres and the The Mall, Aberdeen. The new £190 million Union Square retail development was completed in 2009. Major retail parks include the Berryden Retail Park, the Kittybrewster Retail Park and the Beach Boulevard Retail Park.

With excellent transport links and new developments taking place throughout the city, Aberdeen is a very desirable place to live and work. Aberdeen Airport, at Dyce in the North of the city, serves a number of domestic and international destinations including France, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Austria, Ireland and Scandinavian countries. Aberdeen railway station has recently been modernised and is on the main UK rail network and connects directly to major cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow and London.

There are six major roads leading into and out of the city. The A90 is the main arterial route into the city from the north and south, linking Aberdeen to Edinburgh, Dundee, Brechin and Perth in the south and Ellon, Peterhead and Fraserburgh in the north. The A96 links to Elgin and Inverness and the north west. The A93 is the main route to the west, heading towards Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms. The A944 also heads west, through Westhill and onto Alford. The A92 was the original southerly road to Aberdeen prior to the building of the A90, and is now used as a tourist route, connecting the towns of Montrose and Arbroath. The A947 exits the city at Dyce and goes on to Newmachar, Oldmeldrum and Turriff finally ending at Banff and Macduff.
