Plymouth is a city in south Devon which is destination of commerce for a great deal of the surrounding area. Over 250,000 people live in the city although many more people work and shop in Plymouth from nearby towns and villages.
It grew as a major fishing port and this led way to a lot of industry and manufacturing in the area. Whilst this declined other industries grew, noticeably the service and public sectors. The defecnce sector is also very prominent there as well as a large and well respected university.
In recent years there has been dramatic change in the city and this is continueing under a major regeneration, the completion of which will be 2020. This has stregnthened the retail offering greatly as well as the facilities for the vast amounts of boats which visit the city. This redevelopment as also meant the construction of more office space and this market is ever growing. There still remains a lot of industrial space as well. The Tamar Science Park is an example of this with over 500 businesses operating there.
