With a population of approximately 45,000, Kilmarnock is a thriving community located between Glasgow and Ayr alongside the M77 motorway.

Historically, the town boasted very strong textile and engineering industries, but these have tended to suffer in more recent times. Whilst some of the established manufacturing business have survived, they are now relatively few and far between. There are, however, major regeneration plans in the offing that should serve to bolster the town's retail supply and attract more commerce.

The eastern part of the town centre has already been redeveloped, while, on the leisure front, a new four-star hotel has recently opened next to Rugby Park, the home of Kilmarnock F.C., and new catering establishments, such as Merchants and the award winning Jefferson Restaurant have been attracted to the town centre. In terms of specialist shopping, the very desirable Bank Street area is home to a variety of gift shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, while a number of multiple retail warehouse operators are represented on the retail parks at Queen's Drive and Glencairn Square.

Much new quality housing has been constructed on the northern fringes of the town in order to service the demand for dormitory housing. With a journey time of 20 minutes from Kilmarnock to Glasgow (roughly half that of the existing train service), the M77 motorway has transformed the link between Glasgow and Kilmarnock and has made the latter far more accessible for commuters. Recent house price increases have reflected this.
